New York City has several opulent buildings and skyscrapers with prestigious addresses, including Park Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Upper East plus the West Side, and Sutton Place, and new buildings popping up all over the city with one thing in common. The Doorman at the entrance.

The Doorman.

The New York doorman is security for hotels, offices and residential buildings. They are closely intertwined with the residents and visitors in the area. The concierge or the Doorman a familiar face you see while entering and exiting these structures.

They greet you with the most immeasurable smiles on all occasions. The doormen often help you with the door and direct you to your final destination in that building. They are accommodating to the resident when you need them the most. With hands full after a long day out and about town. Their familiar smiles often welcome you with a “How do you do, sir or ma’am?”

They are there to assist you and bring convenience to life by helping you hail a cab, being aware of the happenings in and around the building, and making sure packages are delivered to their rightful owners.

One lovely summer evening, I took these images of fascinating doorkeepers from ethnically diverse backgrounds. The idea came to me as I saw a doorman on his hands and knees polishing the entryway’s threshold of a building. Seeing the sense of pride, dedication, and great care in maintaining the entrance’s impeccable appearance as if it was his own home was endearing.

As a New York City Photographer, the idea came to me that Sunday night after walking with a friend home to 89th Street from 124th Street. That stunning summer night was perfect for taking photographs, with the camera in my hands as I talked past a doorman shining the threshold at 11:00 pm. It was an incredible photo moment which he allowed me to capture. What devotion, I thought to myself. I wanted to find more of these dedicated people to photograph that same night, and I did.

Seeing the sense of pridefulness, commitment, and diligence he upheld was endearing. This New York City Doorman exercised great care in maintaining the entrance’s impeccable appearance as if it was his own home.
