On October 30, 2010, Hurricane Tomas swept across the Eastern Caribbean, ravaging almost the entire island of St. Lucia. Passing about 40 miles south, the storm battered the island with 70 mph winds and damaging gusts. Torrential rains fell for 21 hours. The southern part of the 238-square-mile island, including Bexon, Dennery, Laborie, Choiseul, Soufriere, Vieux Fort, Canaries, Anse La Raye, and other communities, was most affected.
